Chinese authorities say they are preparing to launch a crackdown on melamine-laced milk after the scandal over tainted products, which made hundreds of thousands of children ill two years ago and damaged China's brand reputation overseas, resurfaced.

Earlier this week official media called for an intensive sweep to identify tainted products after it emerged that some of the companies involved in the 2008 scandal recycled tainted milk powder into dairy products rather than destroying it as ordered by Beijing. Melamine-laced milk powder caused at least six deaths in 2008 and made 300,000 babies ill.
已經有不少省份發現了含有三聚氰胺的食品。這種化學物質通常用于塑料與化肥，但其被加入牛奶中，以從表面上提高牛奶的蛋白質含量。
Products laced with the substance – normally used in plastics and fertiliser but added to milk to boost its apparent protein content – have been found in foods in several provinces.

Xinhua news agency reported on Monday that dairy products from at least five manufacturers in different provinces had been removed from shelves because of melamine contamination. Some of the seizures took place several months ago but have only now come to light – raising fresh concerns about a government cover-up of food quality problems.

Local government officials were found to have covered up reports of serious illnesses caused by melamine in 2008, delaying reporting the cases to Beijing until after the Olympics to avoid damaging the country's image.

Chen Zhu, China's health minister, said at the weekend that inspections would be stepped up to stop dairy companies recycling milk powder laced with melamine.
新華社援引一個政府食品安全會議的聲明稱：“當前，在整頓高壓態勢下，仍有個別企業和個人置人民群眾生命安全和身體健康于不顧，利欲熏心、頂風作案。”
“A few unscrupulous companies and individuals still put profit above conscience and neglect the public's health, even though [the government] has launched a high-pressure clampdown on food safety,” according to a statement from a government food safety meeting quoted by Xinhua.

The news comes as the Chinese dairy industry, which has expanded rapidly in recent years as affluent mainlanders have developed a taste for milk, yogurt and other dairy products, had begun to recover from the scandal, which severely damaged its image with consumers in China and worldwide.
北京東方艾格農業咨詢有限公司(Beijing Orient Agribusiness Consultants)乳制品分析師陳連芳表示，受三聚氰胺污染的產品于2009年下半年開始重現市場，這在一定程度上是因為消費者需求開始從三聚氰胺丑聞中復蘇，導致原奶價格大幅上漲。
Chen Lianfang, dairy analyst at Beijing Orient Agribusiness Consultants, said melamine-contaminated products began to reappear in the market in the second half of 2009, partly as a result of a sharp rise in crude milk prices as consumer demand began to recover from the melamine scandal.
