The team MVP of 2007, 21-year-old Preston Parker, was dismissed of the FSU Football team after being arrested for the second time in less than a year, after been charged of driving with the influence of alcohol and consuming marihuana. Parker was already on probation and was ordered by the court to community service and bi-weekly drug testing.
Parker was found asleep behind the wheel in a drive-thru of McDonalds around 4:42am on Saturday. The police stated that Parker admitted been drinking and smoking marihuana. Parker tested positive in the marihuana use and tested 0.054 of blood level of alcohol. With these charges Parker fine will be up to $1000 and up to six month of prison.
This past Monday, FSU coaches dismissed the wide receiver base on his latest arrest and the violation of certain rules, which were already imposed to him after letting him come back to the team during the summer, after his incident of last April. Back then, FSU gave him a two-game suspension and set up stricter rules such as 50 additional hours of community service, bi-weekly drug tests and required him to move into a controlled dorm, since the receiver had already been arrested once before, but they gave him a chance to vindicate his behavior and be a role model for the team. However, the player violated this on Saturday and his coach Bobby Bowden dismissed him immediately.
''Preston Parker has been dismissed from the Florida State football team due to his latest violation of team policy,'' Coach Bobby Bowden alleged in an announcement released.
Parker got into problems for the first time in November 2006 when the police was called from electronic store that accused him of attempting to steal a compact disc. He agreed then to go through to a diversion program and shortly the charge was dismissed.
However, a major issue came on April 2008 when he was arrested on gun and drug charges. During that time, he was charged with 12-month probation and 50 hours of community service. Now, with this last incident committed within less than a year; he completely lost his opportunities with the FSU football team.
During Parker’s time with FSU, as a sophomore in 2007 he was named team’s offensive MVP after catching 62 receptions for 791 yards, rushing for 270 yards and with 52 rushing attempts. Although during 2008 Parker returned to action after his two-game suspensions against Western Carolina and Chattanooga and guided Florida State with 40 receptions, the rest of his statistics of 372 receiving yards, 10 carries for 87 yards, were not even close to his numbers in the 2007 season.
Now with his dismiss, FSU is looking into other three new receivers and has two returners and one freshman to replace Parker’s position. On the other hand, Parker is already too late to list himself to the draft but could have a chance to be selected in the league’s supplemental draft or to get scholarship somewhere else. Let’s hope for the Seminoles to find good replacements for next season and for Parker to learn from his mistakes and change for good so he can still have a future in football.
